Millions of people head off to Europe on a backpacking trip each year. Having done it five times, I can tell you that it will be one of the best times of your life. That being said, you must take some things with you. On the positive side, you don’t need that much.

Europe is not another planet. I mention this because you should keep in mind you can buy everything there if you forget it here. The first time people go backpacking in Europe, they tend to completely overdue it on the packing front. You are not climbing Mount Everest, so don’t overdue it!

The first things to pack are clothes. Depending on where you are going, you may need clothes for warm weather or cold. Assuming it is warm, you need a couple of shirts that are wrinkle resistant. You will buy others there, so don’t pack ten. You also will need a pair of shorts and a bathing suit. If you plan on visiting museums and churches, you will need a pair of long pants to get into many of them. Pack something light that is wrinkle resistant.

For your feet, you can load up on socks because they do not take much space. You will need some sandals and then a pair of something comfortable. Some prefer hiking boots, but I usually went with cross trainers. Whatever you do, make sure you get used to the shoes before heading off. You are going to walk a lot, so blisters from new shoes can be a killer.

On the personal front, you need a brush, toothpaste and any medicinal needs. That is it. You can buy anything else you need as you need it. There is zero point to lugging around shampoo all over Europe. Murphy’s law says it will open in your backpack! Keep it super simple.

While your trip will result in great memories, they will fade in time. Take a camera and, of course, one of our travel journals. The camera should be hardy so it can take the inevitable beating that will occur. Our travel journals are compact and in a case. They are perfect for trips to Europe because we were on one when we got the idea! Check them out:

Europeans can read. This means you can buy guidebooks over there. If you plan to visit three or four countries, take the guidebook for the FIRST country only. You can pick up the others over there or trade with other backpackers. Guidebooks are heavy and this will save you the aggravation of hauling them everywhere. Also, cybercaf?s are everywhere, so you do not need to bring a laptop unless you really have a specific need.

Finally, keep copies of your passport and any supporting documentation with you. One set goes in your backpack while another goes in your shorts, money belt or wherever you have space.

An adventure tour on the European continent allows you to walk the very lands where so many of the adventures in ancient stories took place. If you are looking for an experience that will provide you with fond memories for years to come, you might want to consider some of the following tour destinations.

Scotland

Many people have a love affair with Scottish culture and history, so Scotland can be a wonderful destination for an adventure tour. When touring Scotland you can walk the highlands and the lowlands like the Scots of old, either camping in the wild or staying at a different Scottish inn each night. For those wishing to get in touch with Scottish culture, a Scottish adventure tour can be a dream come true.

France

If you don’t want to visit Scotland, France might be a better option. You might consider hiking the Haute Route, a mountaineering route that was designed to link Chamonix and Zermatt (which are two of the most well-known and beloved mountaineering areas in all of Europe.) You might also wish to go canoeing on the rivers of southwestern France, moving along rivers bathed in history as you can see castles and other historical sites from your seat in the canoe. There are tours that will take you through the Christmas markets of France, as well as the breathtaking cities of Paris, Lyon and Nice.

Italy and the Netherlands

If canoeing and hiking is not exactly what you’re looking for, consider taking a bike tour of Italy or the Netherlands. Both of these countries have centuries of history and culture for you to take in while enjoying the freedom of biking under your own power. Adventure tours are designed to take you through beautiful and culturally-important regions of the country, and are generally arranged so that you will have luxurious lodging each night to help you relax from the rigors of riding all day. Bike tours allow you to cover more ground each day than hiking tours do, so you will generally get to see more of the country as you continue your tour.

England and Ireland

If you are planning on visiting England, you might consider taking one of the hiking tours along Hadrian’s Wall. This wall stretches across the Pennines and is considered one of the feats of Roman engineering. By taking a tour along the wall you will be able to marvel at the length of it as you consider that it was built by hand… all while enjoying the beauty of the hillsides of northern England. Similar tours can also be taken in Ireland, where you can see the old rock walls that in many places are still maintained by the descendants of those who built them.

Greece

Should you want an adventure tour that doesn’t involve quite as much hiking, head to Greece or other locations in the Mediterranean where cruises are offered to let you experience the historic coastlines that helped to shape so much of Europe’s civilization. Unlike cruise lines which have you cruising on massive luxury ships, many of the Greek and Mediterranean cruises use smaller ships built in a more classic style so that you will know the feel of those ancient ships while learning about the culture that surrounded them. Adventure tours taken in this area can include visits some of the most beautiful islands and ancient locations in the world, such as Mykonos, Kusadasi, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini.

European Adventure Tours by Train

Other popular European tour options involve tours by train. Most of Europe is connected by a railway system, and with a EuroPass you can take a train easily from one country to the next so as to enjoy the cultural and historical significance of each. You can visit the vineyards of France, the castles of Germany, and the markets of Italy with nothing but a train ride in between. Tours which are centered around train transport generally include your EuroPass in the price of the tour package.

Regardless of the type of adventure tour that you want to take, make sure that you spend a little time exploring the offerings of different tour coordinators so that you can find exactly the tour package that’s right for you. In addition to getting ideas for additional things that you would like to do while in Europe, you may be able to save money on the adventure tour that you take as well.

Adventure tours offer a level of excitement and exploration quite different from an ordinary vacation. This type of vacation typically involves a well planned out tour of not just one city or vacation destination, but several. Also, an adventure tour highlights cultural and historical sites and can involve at least some level of physical exertion; everything from coping with off road exploration to rafting and climbing.

Europe where many people want to have a change that involves working and moving to another country, then it is best that you be prepared because working abroad can be a very intimidating time. Many people asks me how to work in Europe especially now when people are more aware of the possibilities.

Although the idea of working in Europe

Choose where you want to go. It helps tremendously if you know someone who lives abroad. They can help you with contacts and accommodations while you look for work.

You may or may not get that job immediately so be sure you have that extra cash to tide you over for rent and food till you do. The worst that could happen, if you cannot find that job and the money runs out, then you can say you have had a short holiday.

If you are not fussy about the type of work you want to do in Europe, then you have plenty of options. If you have no experience (although better chance of securing that job if you do) then you can consider these:

    * Work in a bar/pub/restaurant – if possible apply directly to the manager. Apply to several places, you stand a better chance of getting a job that way
* Admin – these are pretty easy to come by, go to their recruitment agencies
* Sales – shops, streets, resorts, hotels
* Freelance – check out their local newspaper

Granted it’s not your dream job, but it will put some cash in your pockets while you explore the country firsthand.

Once you get that job be sure to get contacts. Let your new found friends, colleagues and boss know of you skills. You will be surprised at the doors that could open once the know. Most of the jobs I did came from recommendations from people I hardly know.

People are generally curious about other countries and telling them about yourself can make interesting conversations. They will remember you and can easily give you tips on job openings that you would not otherwise know.

So let’s through each step of the process of producing high quality handmade wigs, and show the real costs.

Firstly, take the acquisition of hair. The cost of hair for one wig (0,2 – 0,4 kg) varies from 30 to 40 USD throughout most Eastern European countries. There is little variation there, but an important additional cost is incurred by high-quality wig-makers who collect hair in an appropriate and well-controlled way. The best wig-makers visit hairdressers and care for the hair themselves, using no middleman. They do not buy hair from wholesalers because wholesalers blend hair, because it is so time-consuming to acquire really good hair.

Second, take the other materials used in making wigs. These are not expensive and their costs do not exceed 50 USD for a typical wig. These are the materials used to produce a cap. More and more wig-makers are now buying ready-made caps, so called “monofilament”, which are gaining popularity and their cost is not very high.

Third, take the labor involved in making high quality handmade wigs. This is the main cost factor. Handmade wig needs at least a week to be produced by an experienced expert worker. It takes a week of hard work, with each hair being knitted to the cap with a very small crochet-needle or glued with a special glue. In the case of long hair, the production time could be two to three weeks. Reliable wig-makers knit hair with a double-knot which makes the construction much more durable but needs some extra work-time. Depending on the type of wig, length of hair and type of cap the cost of labor is from 150 to 300 USD.

Finally, you cannot forget other typical business costs like investment’s amortization, management costs, taxes, insurances, rent, and profit. Altogether, the price of a handmade human hair wig made from European hair cannot be lower than 500-600 USD even for the shortest hair. There is no upper limit and it only depends on how much a customer is willing to pay, but before you pay 1000 USD or more for your wig remember the real costs of its creation.

Romanesque Art was considered an early phase of the Gothic Art. It refers to the style prevalent in the Western Europe from tenth to twelfth century. The Romanesque Art peaked between 1075 AD and 1125 AD, in France, Italy, Britain, and the German fiefdoms. Romanesque Art was all about architectural, pictorial, and decorative styles, which literally means, “in the style of the Romans.” Romanesque Art also has some occasional traces of Byzantine, Carolingian, Antique, and Eastern Art, especially in paintings. Romanesque Painting is strongly related to the Byzantine and late classical painting tradition, which had survived the barbarian invasions during several centuries. The ‘Insular Art’ of British Isles too had its role to play.

Close more to ‘Abstraction’ than ‘Realism,’ Romanesque Paintings have a marked didactic character and they are used almost exclusively for religious purposes. “Christ in Majesty,” “Last Judgment,” “Christ’s Life,” “Four Evangelists,” “Gospel Books,” “apostles,” “prophets,” “Apocalypse,” “Noah’s Ark,” were the key themes portrayed. Blue-green, yellow ochre, reddish-brown, and black were the colors mostly used. Most of these paintings decorated the large wall surfaces and the plain, curving vaults of the Romanesque period. Mural painting percolated in well, especially in England, France, Serbia, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Very few of these large wall paintings have survived due to wear and tear. Some of the remaining frescoes can be found in the “Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe” in Poitou, France and in the “Church of S. George” at Oberzell. The paintings of sacred figures and objects were also made on glass panes. The “Cathedral of Saint Denis” near Paris has several examples of such glass paintings.

Romanesque Art also included illuminated manuscripts. The “Book of the Bible” was the most important manuscript of the Romanesque period and several illuminated copies of it were made. Many different versions of Bibles, as “Winchester Bible” were also carried out and they were adorned with the scenes from both Old and the New Testaments. Other manuscript illumination that arose in England, like the “Lindisfarne Gospels,” were characterized by geometrically laced designs in capital letters, borders, and sometimes even on the entire page, which are often called carpet pages. The designs also frequently contained the representations of monstrous & grotesque human figures, birds, and beasts. There were several schools of manuscript illumination, developing distinct styles.

During Romanesque Period, wall paintings supplanted the church mosaics, with smoother forms and less aggressive designs. Romanesque Art reigned the West for almost around two centuries with its extraordinary creative richness, which even today is as captivating as it was then.
